This year Top Chef has added a new face to the judges’ table. However, he is very familiar to many cable viewers. Ted Allen will alternate weeks with the familiar face of Food and Wine’s Gail Simmons. Allen first became familiar to viewers of food TV as the food and dining expert of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. However, did you know he had a distinguished resume well before that?
Although his college degree is in Psychology, Ted Allen completed a masters’ degree in Journalism and headed to Chicago to pursue a career as a reporter. Ultimately, he landed at Chicago Magazine as a senior editor writing mostly about food, wine and restaurants. The magazine remains one of the nation’s best regional magazines. The food reporting is top-notch.
In 1997 Ted Allen began an ongoing role as a contributing editor to Esquire magazine. In 2003 Bravo came calling and Allen ended up as one of the fab 5 experts on Queer Eye. He has also been a regular judge on Food Network’s Iron Chef America. This year he joined the cast of Top Chef. Ted Allen made his first appearance at the special showdown between chefs from seasons 1 and 2. Tonight will be his first appearance in the regular season taking a seat with Tom and Padma as a judge. Welcome Ted!
